Classical and Neoclassical Indeterminacy in One-shot versus Ongoing Equilibria

چکیده
I analyze two connections between neoclassical and classical economics. First, I consider the indeterminacy that arises for both schools: in the neoclassical theories of overlapping generations and of factor pricing and in Sraffa’s price theory. Neoclassical indeterminacy occurs only in environments where relative prices can change through time; otherwise, determinacy obtains. Although these results challenge the Sraffian position on indeterminacy, the classical principle that current economic activity is embedded in the past proves to be a powerful insight: it establishes the robustness of factor-price indeterminacy and casts doubt on the importance of overlapping-generations indeterminacy. Second, I argue that recent claims that capital-theoretic paradoxes arise in intertemporal general equilibrium modes, not just in aggregative theory, cannot be validated.

The Sequential Indeterminacy Problem
General equilibrium models generically are determinate and have a finite number of equilibria. But, with linear activities and some inelastically supplied factors of production, the economies that arise endogenously as perfect-foresight equilibria proceed through time can robustly be indeterminate. During the initial period of an intertemporal model, the perfect-foresight equilibria typically a...
متن کاملIndeterminacy in a log–linearized neoclassical growth model with quasi-geometric discounting
This paper studies the properties of solutions to a log–linearized version of the neoclassical growth model with quasi-geometric discounting. We show that after the log–linearization, the model has indeterminacy and multiplicity of equilibria even though the original non-linear model has a unique interior solution. Specifically, in both the deterministic and stochastic cases, the log–linearized...
متن کاملDid Sunspot Forces Cause the Great Depression?∗
We apply neoclassical modelling techniques to the period of the Great Depression. In particular, we examine a modification of the real business cycle model in which the possibility of indeterminacy of equilibria arises. In other words, agents’ self-fulfilling expectations can serve as a primary impulse behind fluctuations. We find that the model, driven only by these measured sunspot shocks, ca...
متن کاملTI-games : An Exploration of Type Indeterminacy in Strategic Decision-making
In this paper we explore an extention of the Type Indeterminacy model of decision-making to strategic decision-making. A 2X2 game is investigated. We first show that in a one-shot simultaneaous move setting the TI-model is equivalent to a standard incomplete information model. We then let the game be preceded by a cheap-talk promise exchange game. We show in an example that in the TI-model the ...
متن کاملCredit Market Imperfection, Labor Supply Complementarity, and Global Indeterminacy
The possibility of sunspot equilibria and endogenous cycles due to self-fulfilling expectations are explored in a one-sector overlapping-generations model with credit market imperfection. It is shown that a strategic complementarity between agent’s optimal labor supply decisions may arise when the credit market is imperfect. Multiplicity of steady states and local indeterminacy of equilibrium c...
